This is one of the first songs that got me interested in Dutch House (which then led to Moombahton).

So I’ve decided to start writing longer posts. I still want to post music to keep people that arn’t interested in my writing entertained, but ya (I could have probably left the”but ya” out).

So this post I will talk about Dutch house.

Dutch house is a sub-genre of house that originates from the Netherlands (go figure). It has two general defining features (in my mind). First, the four on the floor beat (the steady kick drum that drives house music) is syncopated with some other percussive sound, be it snare, rimshot, another kick, some tribal drum, or even a percussive bass. That aspect of Dutch House is what drew me to the genre in the first place. This song that I posted is a perfect example of a syncopated house rhythm. I remember the first tim I heard this I didn’t even recognize that is had a four on the floor beat behind it, that’s what blew my mind the first time.

The second aspect of Dutch House is the lead synth. I feel like this is the main deterrent for people that criticize the genre. I have to admit I was pretty turned off the first time I heard the “classic” dutch synth (feel free to check the link). I feel like this is a hate it or love it type thing. In a club I can totally feel it, it provides a perfect contrast to the heavy bass of the beat.

You’ll definitely see me post more Dutch House type things. I put the syncopated Dutch drums in lots of my own work. I don’t use the synths as much.
